The PCI-PMI Transparency Platform reveals a significant increase in energy infrastructure projects, with 235 new projects announced on April 29, 2026, amid rising inflation and economic uncertainty across the EU.
The new list includes 113 electricity projects, 100 hydrogen projects, and 17 CO2 network projects. These initiatives aim to bolster cross-border energy infrastructure and support the EU’s decarbonisation goals.
These projects will benefit from streamlined permit-granting procedures and regulatory support, which could accelerate their implementation. They are also eligible for EU funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Energy programme.
The upcoming call for applications will launch on April 30, 2026, with a deadline set for the end of September 2026. This timeline aligns with the EU’s broader strategy to address soaring energy prices and inflation expectations.
Despite these developments, output price inflation reached its highest level in 37 months, indicating persistent economic pressures. The composite PMI fell into contraction for the first time since May 2025, highlighting concerns about an economic slowdown.
The manufacturing sector in Germany saw output and new orders edge higher; however, there are warning signs of potential contraction. “The recovery in the German economy has been stopped in its tracks by the war in the Middle East,” an agency representative noted.
Christine Lagarde emphasized the need for caution, stating that uncertainty about the duration of current shocks suggests gathering more information before making firm monetary policy conclusions.
This substantial increase in energy infrastructure projects illustrates a proactive approach by EU stakeholders to navigate economic challenges while promoting sustainability. However, officials have not confirmed how these initiatives will directly impact inflation or energy prices moving forward.
