Severe heatwave conditions have led to an early announcement of summer vacations across multiple Indian states for 2026. In Delhi, schools will close from May 11 to June 30, marking a total of 50 days off. This is part of a broader trend affecting various regions due to extreme temperatures.
Key summer vacation dates:
- Uttar Pradesh: May 20 to June 15 (40 days)
- Bihar: June 1 to June 20 (20 days)
- Rajasthan: May 17 to June 20 (34 days)
- Haryana: June 1 to June 30 (30 days)
- Chhattisgarh: April 20 to June 15 (56 days)
- Andhra Pradesh and Telangana: April 24 to June 11 (48 days)
- Odisha: Holidays started on April 27
- West Bengal: Vacations ongoing with end dates expected soon
The decision stems from increasingly severe heatwaves that pose risks to children’s health. Parents express concerns about sending their children to Anganwadi schools during these conditions. Renuka, a concerned parent, stated, “It has become difficult for parents to drop their children at Anganwadi schools and pick them up after half-day classes due to severe heatwaves.” Anganwadi teachers echoed this sentiment, saying, “Fearing heatwaves which may cause fevers and sunstroke, parents are not willing to send their children to Anganwadi Schools.”
This year’s early break is unprecedented compared to previous years. In many states, traditional summer breaks typically start in late May or early June. The ongoing situation raises questions about how education will adapt in the face of climate challenges.
Officials have not confirmed whether additional measures will be implemented as the heatwave continues. However, the impact on school operations is clear as states prioritize student safety during extreme weather events.
