Eci: Election Commission of India Publishes Voter List in West Bengal

The Election Commission of India is set to publish a supplementary voter list in West Bengal today, addressing ongoing controversies regarding voter exclusions. This publication marks the first under the SIR process, aiming to resolve discrepancies in electoral rolls.

Before this development, concerns loomed over significant numbers of voters potentially being excluded. A total of 27 lakh pending voter records have been settled, with approximately 2 lakh names processed daily. This proactive approach aims to ensure that eligible voters are registered and able to participate in upcoming elections.

As part of this process, voters can appeal online through the ECI Net app or offline at district and sub-divisional offices if they have objections to the published list. To facilitate this, 19 appeal tribunals have been established across 23 districts following directives from the Supreme Court.

The impact of these changes is significant for political parties involved. The supplementary list could alter the dynamics in West Bengal’s electoral landscape, especially amidst accusations regarding unfair exclusions. Political leaders like Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury have voiced concerns about transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

In contrast, Tamil Nadu has seen a notable shift in its voter count as well. The final electoral rolls indicate a drop from 6.41 crore to 5.67 crore, raising questions about the reasons behind this decline. The largest constituency in Chennai district, Shozhinganallur, has 5,36,991 electors, while Thiruvallur district boasts the highest number of electors at 31,57,413. Conversely, Ariyalur district has the fewest electors at 5,22,954.

This situation draws attention to ongoing discussions around electoral integrity and access. Archana Patnaik highlighted that anyone can check their names on the website to ensure their registration status. The ECI’s efforts aim to enhance public confidence in the electoral system.

The unfolding events in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu illustrate broader trends within India’s electoral framework as authorities strive for greater accountability and inclusivity.
