Darjeeling: ASPHL Launches Three Hotels in India’s Leisure Destinations

On March 31, 2026, ASPHL, part of the Apeejay Surrendra Group, announced the launch of three hotels in India’s popular leisure destinations. Among these, Zone by The Park Darjeeling stands out as a significant entry into the hill station market, which is known for its scenic beauty and tourism potential.

Zone by The Park Darjeeling, along with Zone Connect by The Park Gangtok and Zone Connect by The Park Katra, represents a strategic move by ASPHL to diversify its portfolio. Vikas Ahluwalia, a spokesperson for ASPHL, emphasized the importance of this launch, stating, “The simultaneous launch of these three hotels underscores our commitment to growth and the diversification of our portfolio.” This expansion is expected to enhance the hospitality landscape in Darjeeling, which has a combined population of approximately 0.875 million across Darjeeling, Kurseong, and Kalimpong, according to the 2011 census.

As the hospitality sector in Darjeeling evolves, the political landscape is also heating up. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has earmarked three seats in the upcoming elections for its ally, the Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM). This political maneuvering comes as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has maintained a stronghold in the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, winning it four consecutive times since 2009. The dynamics of local governance and development are pivotal as the region prepares for the elections.

Ruden Sada Lepcha, the incumbent MLA defending his Kalimpong seat as a BGPM candidate, has voiced the sentiments of the local populace, asserting, “People of Kalimpong will vote for development as they are tired of the promises BJP has been making since 2009.” This statement reflects a growing discontent among voters regarding the BJP’s governance and promises over the years.

In contrast, Anit Thapa, the leader of the BGPM, has criticized the BJP’s claims regarding the protection of the Gorkha identity, urging voters to prioritize development. He stated, “We are asking people to vote for development. The BJP has been fooling the Gorkhas since 2009 by claiming it wants to protect the region’s identity.” This highlights the ongoing struggle for political representation and the need for genuine development in the region.

Moreover, Sonam Lama, a local leader, pointed out the issue of corruption within the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), emphasizing that good governance is essential for the region’s progress. He remarked, “Corruption in the GTA administration is a key issue. People know that only BJP can ensure good governance.” This sentiment underscores the complexity of the political environment as the election approaches.

As the launch of the hotels coincides with the political climate, the implications for both the hospitality sector and local governance are significant. The entry of ASPHL into Darjeeling’s market could potentially stimulate economic growth and job creation, which are crucial for the local population. However, the political dynamics will play a critical role in shaping the future of development in the region.

Currently, the TMC has announced 291 candidates for Bengal’s 294 constituencies, indicating a robust strategy to maintain its influence in the state. The outcome of the elections will not only determine the political landscape but also impact the ongoing developments in sectors like tourism and hospitality in Darjeeling.
