Microsoft’s introduction of a voluntary employee buyout program signifies a major shift in its operational strategy as it continues to reduce its workforce. Amy Hood, Microsoft’s Chief Financial Officer, stated, “We continue to evolve how we operate to increase our pace and agility, and therefore we expect headcount will decrease year over year.” This initiative comes as the tech industry faces increasing job cuts, with 18,720 layoffs announced in March 2026 alone—a 40% increase from the previous year.
As of June 2025, Microsoft had approximately 228,000 employees globally, with 125,000 located in the U.S. About 8,750 workers could be eligible for this buyout program. This move marks the first such initiative in Microsoft’s 51-year history.
The company’s financial results indicate robust growth despite these changes. Microsoft reported $83 billion in quarterly revenue and $32 billion in net income. Additionally, its AI business has reached an annual revenue run rate of over $37 billion, marking an impressive increase of 123%.
Hood also projected a growth forecast of 39% to 40% for the Azure business in the current quarter. This growth is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to invest heavily in AI while managing its workforce effectively.
The company has recently cut thousands of jobs as part of ongoing cost-cutting measures. Microsoft’s operational changes reflect a commitment to align capacity with demand signals observed across its markets.
