Consumers in Uttar Pradesh will now have 15 days to recharge their prepaid smart meters, providing them with more flexibility and reducing the urgency of recharging. Previously, customers faced disconnections immediately upon running out of balance.
This new policy means that prepaid smart meters will function similarly to postpaid systems. Now, consumers will receive monthly bills detailing their electricity usage.
Key changes:
- Consumers will receive a bill every month along with a 15-day window for payment.
- Outstanding bills up to April 30 can be paid in 10 installments.
- Bills will be calculated based on consumption from the first to the last day of each month.
- Notifications will be sent via SMS and WhatsApp directly to consumers’ mobile devices.
Energy Minister A.K. Sharma stated, “This step has been taken keeping consumer convenience in mind.” He emphasized that the new billing system would be easier and ensure timely information about bills.
Additionally, consumers can register complaints through the 1912 portal if they encounter issues related to smart meters or billing processes. The government plans to set up special camps to address these concerns effectively.
Strict directives have also been issued regarding electricity supply, aiming to enhance reliability for users. This initiative reflects a significant shift in how electricity is managed and billed in the region.
