Rain: Heavy Causes Displacement and Fatalities in Brazil

Heavy rains in northeastern Brazil on May 2, 2026, have resulted in at least six fatalities and displaced around 1,500 people, highlighting the increasing frequency of rain disasters in the region.

The National Center for Risk and Disaster Management in Brazil issued 22 emergency alerts during this severe weather event. Flooding and landslides were particularly devastating in Recife, Pernambuco, where at least two deaths occurred.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), these extreme weather conditions coincide with a maximum temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius recorded at Safdarjung station in Delhi. This suggests significant temperature fluctuations may be contributing to the severity of storms.

The IMD has also issued yellow and orange warnings for thunderstorms and gusty winds across various parts of Delhi-NCR. They predict daytime temperatures will remain between 36–38 degrees Celsius.

A recent study indicates that rain disasters, including flooding and landslides, have tripled in Brazil from 1991 to 2023. This alarming trend raises concerns about future weather patterns and disaster preparedness.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated, “The government continues to monitor the situation to provide all necessary assistance.” Yet, the full extent of damage caused by these storms is still being assessed.
