Pay commission

The 8th Pay Commission is poised to revise the salaries and pensions for over 1.2 crore central government employees and pensioners. This significant overhaul is expected to impact approximately 50-55 lakh employees and 65-70 lakh pensioners, totaling a workforce of over 1.2 crore individuals.

Key facts:

  • The Terms of Reference for the 8th Pay Commission received Cabinet approval on 28 October 2025.
  • Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai serves as the chairperson, alongside Pulak Ghosh as a part-time member and Pankaj Jain as the member secretary.
  • The fitment factor proposals range from 1.8 to 3.833, which could lead to a substantial salary hike.

The current minimum basic pay for central government employees stands at ₹18,000 under the previous 7th Pay Commission, while the maximum basic salary reaches ₹2,25,000 for certain positions. The proposed changes may result in a remarkable 283% increase in salaries if the fitment factor approaches its upper limit of 3.833.

Moreover, the minimum basic pension for pensioners is currently ₹9,000, with potential adjustments on the horizon based on the commission’s recommendations. The anticipated implementation date for these changes is set for 1 January 2026.

The commission’s outreach efforts include planned visits to regions such as Ladakh, Srinagar, and Hyderabad, indicating a commitment to gather insights from various stakeholders. This ensures that the recommendations reflect the needs of those affected by the new pay structure.

As government spending on employee compensation increases with these revisions, officials have emphasized that this move aims to improve living standards amid rising inflation rates. The dearness allowance will also undergo adjustments in line with these changes.

The upcoming months will be critical as stakeholders await detailed recommendations from the commission. The final report will determine how these changes affect countless lives across India.
