Noida Protests Cause Six-Hour Traffic Standstill

Traffic across Noida and on key corridors came to a near standstill for nearly six hours on April 13, 2026, due to a large-scale labour protest. The demonstration, which began on April 9, was sparked by escalating living costs and stagnant wages affecting workers in the region.

The protest severely impacted major routes, including the Delhi-Noida Link Road, DND flyway, and Delhi-Meerut Expressway, leading to long tailbacks stretching several kilometres. Commuters faced significant delays, with one individual reporting that a journey from Indirapuram to Okhla, which typically takes 45 minutes, extended to two and a half hours during the protest.

The Delhi Traffic Police issued its first advisory at 11:48 am, as the situation escalated. By mid-afternoon, the traffic began to ease, and by late evening, the situation was nearly resolved. However, the disruption had already caused significant chaos, impacting school operations in both Delhi and Noida.

In the wake of the protests, Uttar Pradesh Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar stated that the events are being investigated as part of a “larger conspiracy.” He suggested a possible link to external forces, claiming that “forces troubled by the growing popularity of the double-engine government are conspiring to create instability.” This assertion has raised eyebrows and led to further scrutiny of the protests’ origins.

Local authorities faced criticism for their handling of the situation, particularly the Local Intelligence Unit of the Noida Police, which failed to provide timely intelligence that could have prevented the law and order breakdown. The protests resulted in vandalism across 80 factories in Greater Noida and Noida, leading to concerns about the safety and security of workers and businesses in the area.

Residents expressed frustration over the lack of timely advisories. One commuter, Neha Gupta, remarked, “There was no proper advisory in the morning. By the time we realized what was happening, we were already stuck in the middle of it.” This sentiment was echoed by others who faced similar challenges during the protest.

As the dust settles, the effectiveness of police and administrative responses to the protests remains unconfirmed. Authorities are under pressure to ensure that such disruptions are managed more effectively in the future, particularly as living costs continue to rise and worker dissatisfaction grows.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact nature of the “larger conspiracy” mentioned by the Labour Minister, and the community is left awaiting further clarification from officials. The situation in Noida serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing tensions between economic pressures and public response in urban India.
