Jabalpur news: Cruise tragedy raises safety concerns at Bargi Dam

The tragic capsizing of the Narmada Queen at Bargi Dam on May 1, 2026, has raised serious concerns about cruise safety and emergency protocols. The boat was carrying over 40 tourists when it capsized due to a sudden storm, resulting in at least nine confirmed deaths and several others missing.

A yellow alert for heavy rain had been issued by the weather department prior to the incident, prompting questions about why the cruise was allowed to operate. Survivors reported that life jackets were not distributed before departure, which may have exacerbated the situation.

Key facts:

  • The Narmada Queen capsized around 6 PM, with 43 passengers and crew members on board.
  • Rescue operations faced delays, potentially costing lives; divers recovered five bodies by Friday evening.
  • The Madhya Pradesh government announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each deceased victim.

Eyewitness accounts reveal that the weather was clear when passengers boarded. “But as the boat reached mid-dam, the skies turned suddenly,” said Roshan Anand Verma, a survivor. The pilot and crew allegedly abandoned ship before it capsized, according to some accounts.

The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department operated the Narmada Queen, which had been in service since 2006 and underwent annual maintenance in October 2025. A high-level investigation committee has been constituted to probe the incident further.

Officials have not clarified the exact number of missing persons, as reports vary. Currently, six people remain unaccounted for while 28 have been rescued. The delay in rescue operations continues to raise questions about preparedness in adverse weather conditions.
