Gas Cylinder Prices Surge Amid Stricter LPG Booking Rules in India

The price of a 14.2Kg domestic LPG cylinder has increased by Rs 60 due to the ongoing West Asia conflict. This price rise reflects the broader impact of global energy market fluctuations on local consumers.

Additionally, the 19Kg commercial cylinder has seen three price hikes within April alone, totaling Rs 196. Such increases place additional financial pressure on businesses reliant on these cylinders.

In response to these changes, the Indian government has introduced stricter LPG booking rules. The interval for bookings has increased from 21 days to 25 days in urban areas, while rural areas now face a wait of up to 45 days.

To enhance security and efficiency, an OTP-based delivery authentication system will likely become a permanent feature for LPG deliveries. Currently, approximately 98% of LPG bookings are made online, indicating a significant shift towards digital processes.

Moreover, Aadhaar-based biometric authentication is now mandatory for beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana who have not completed their eKYC requirements. This move aims to streamline access to subsidized cooking gas for eligible households.

Households equipped with piped natural gas (PNG) connections cannot surrender their domestic LPG connections. If a household does not switch to PNG despite its availability, LPG supply will cease after three months.

Since March 2026, about 5.45 lakh PNG connections have been established across India. This rapid expansion underscores the government’s push towards cleaner energy sources.

Plans are underway for an additional 2.62 lakh PNG connection infrastructures, further enhancing access to this alternative energy source.

Looking ahead, further revisions in LPG prices are anticipated from May 1, 2026. Observers expect that these adjustments will continue as global energy prices fluctuate.
