Evan Spiegel

Maxwell Zeff unexpectedly became the face of Evan Spiegel on Wikipedia due to a photo mix-up that lasted for a week. This incident underscores the potential pitfalls of online editing, particularly on platforms like Wikipedia.

Zeff, a reporter in his twenties who covers technology companies, found his image on Spiegel’s page after someone with the username ‘Artem G’ made the change. After it was corrected, Artem G reverted back to using Zeff’s photo, which had been taken at a TechCrunch conference.

Such incidents highlight broader challenges within social media trends and Wikipedia editing practices. The mix-up occurred amidst rising discussions about AI-generated content; over two-thirds of new code at Snap Inc. is reportedly AI-generated.

Spiegel, CEO of Snap Inc., has commented on this shift towards automation in tech, predicting a significant transition from engineering-focused roles to those centered on distribution. His remarks reflect an industry trend toward efficiency and faster development.

Reactions to the mix-up have varied. Zeff himself expressed surprise at being confused for the CEO, stating, “Very flattering but that is indeed me, and not the CEO of Snap.” A Snap employee remarked, “Not Max being the second photo that comes up on Google now …” Meanwhile, Artem G defended the change by saying, “Nah, new photo is better, take it to the talk page if you must.”
