Cell broadcast

A nationwide test of the Cell Broadcast Alert System will take place on May 2, 2026, sending emergency alerts to mobile phones across India. This initiative marks a significant advancement in the country’s disaster response capabilities.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will oversee this test, which aims to evaluate system performance and enhance communication technology for public safety. Mobile phone users in Delhi NCR and all state and Union Territory capitals will receive a test emergency alert.

Key facts about the test:

  • The alert will include a loud siren-like sound or vibration, even if phones are on silent mode.
  • The Cell Broadcast System (CBS) enables authorities to send messages to all mobile devices within a specific geographic area without needing individual phone numbers.
  • CBS messages are delivered instantly and remain unaffected by network congestion.
  • The test will occur between 11:15 am and 12:15 pm in Andhra Pradesh’s capital region.

Citizens are advised not to panic upon receiving the message, as it is merely a test. The alert will clearly state that it is a test message and no action is required from the public after receiving it.

This initiative aligns with India’s broader efforts to improve real-time disaster management. Notably, states that are election-bound or share borders with neighboring countries will be exempt from this test.

Officials from the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority emphasized that this is purely a technical exercise aimed at improving system performance. However, no timeline has been shared regarding any future developments following this test.
