India secures six-wicket victory in warm-up match
India achieved a six-wicket victory over a Sri Lanka XI in their sole practice match, building momentum for the upcoming two-match Test series. The warm-up fixture was described as productive by India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, who noted the high intensity displayed by the team.
The practice match provided valuable game time for both batters and bowlers. Shubman Gill contributed with a quick 44 runs, helping to establish a strong foundation for India‘s chase of 207. This performance is expected to boost team morale ahead of the Test series, which is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle.
Individual performances impress coaching staff
Sitanshu Kotak highlighted several individual efforts that stood out during the warm-up. He specifically praised Devdutt Padikkal for his batting and acknowledged the efforts of India‘s fast bowlers. The pacers delivered strong spells despite the pitch offering limited assistance.
Padikkal was a key performer, scoring an unbeaten 142 runs off 164 balls in India‘s first innings. Other players who contributed with the bat included KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar, and Gurnoor Brar. Kotak also mentioned Gurnoor Singh and Mohammed Siraj for their power-hitting displays, noting their ability to hit multiple sixes.
India‘s spin coach, Sairaj Bahutule, also commented on Padikkal‘s performance, stating that he batted beautifully and expressed himself well. Bahutule indicated that Padikkal‘s strong showing has bolstered his case for the number three batting position in the upcoming Test series.
Gill’s return and Jadeja’s all-round contribution
Shubman Gill made his return to action on the final day of the warm-up match after sitting out the first two days due to a blow to his right ring finger sustained during a training session. He scored 44 runs off 54 deliveries, easing concerns about his fitness. Bahutule confirmed that Gill‘s absence was a precaution and that he is ready for the Test series.
Ravindra Jadeja showcased his all-round capabilities throughout the match. In the first innings, he took 2/64 from 15 overs. With the bat, he formed a significant 72-run partnership with Padikkal, scoring 63 runs off 117 balls before retiring hurt. Jadeja continued his strong performance in the second innings, taking 2/33 from seven overs and adding 22 runs off 32 balls before retiring out. His contributions highlight his importance to the team.
In the Sri Lanka XI‘s first innings, they declared at 363/8, with Ravindu Rasantha, Nishan Fernando, and Sonal Dinusha each scoring half-centuries. For India, Manav Suthar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav each took two wickets. India then declared their first innings at 357/6.
The Sri Lanka XI declared their second innings at 200/6, setting India a target of 207 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill provided a strong start to the chase. Jadeja, Pant, and Mohammed Siraj then helped India successfully chase the target in 45 overs. Siraj notably smashed an unbeaten 32 runs off 15 balls, including four sixes, to seal the six-wicket win.
This victory and the individual performances observed are seen as positive indicators for India as they prepare for the ICC World Test Championship series against Sri Lanka, with the first Test scheduled to commence on August 15.
