Rashford’s Return and New Number
Marcus Rashford is set to rejoin Manchester United for the next leg of their summer tour in northern Europe. His return follows a post-World Cup break, during which he was involved with England until the final weekend of the tournament. He could be back on the pitch as early as Wednesday when the Red Devils are scheduled to face Leeds United in Dublin, Ireland.
Rashford’s return comes after a loan spell at Barcelona last summer, which included an option for a permanent transfer. However, he is now departing Camp Nou after one season. His former No. 10 jersey at Old Trafford was reassigned to Matheus Cunha. According to Fabrizio Romano, Rashford will now take the vacant No. 14 shirt. This number was also worn by Rashford during his loan spell at Barcelona and reportedly holds significance for him due to his attachment to the club and city during his time there. The No. 9 shirt was also available, but the No. 14 appealed more to Rashford.
The No. 14 shirt has been worn by 10 different players for Manchester United since fixed jersey numbers were introduced in the Premier League in 1993. It was left open last season and was most recently worn by Christian Eriksen during his tenure at Old Trafford. Notable players who have worn the No. 14 include Jesse Lingard and Javier Hernández. However, Andrei Kanchelskis is often considered the most successful No. 14 in United‘s history, being the first to wear it for the club in the division. The Ukrainian winger was a two-time Premier League champion and was the top scorer for United during the 1994–95 season with 15 goals across all competitions.
Future Role at Old Trafford
Fabrizio Romano has indicated that Rashford will be reintegrated into the Manchester United squad. The only scenario that would prevent this is if a bid from a “top European club” arrives within the remaining three weeks of the transfer window. Currently, there is little to suggest such a move will occur, making re-establishing himself in Manchester the most likely path forward for Rashford, who has two more years remaining on his contract.
Rashford is expected to play a significant role for United this season. The squad is in need of a specialist on the left wing. Although not a first-choice starter for Barcelona, Rashford was a regular contributor last season, achieving 28 goals and assists across all competitions. At his peak for United during the 2022–23 campaign, he scored 30 goals, making him the only player in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era to reach that milestone in a single season.
Michael Carrick, when asked about Rashford following a 1-1 friendly draw with Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg, mentioned, “I’ve played with him. I played in the game he made his debut, so we have a history.” Carrick further stated that Rashford is part of the full squad gathering in Dublin this week, alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martínez.
Reports from Fabrizio Romano suggest that the overwhelming expectation is for Rashford to remain at Manchester United. Romano stated that there are no current movements with other clubs, and Rashford is not considering offers from clubs in Turkey or Saudi Arabia, as these solutions are not of interest to him at this stage of his career. This decision is not primarily about money or proposals, but rather his preference for the calibre of clubs he would join if he were to leave United. His wages, reportedly around £325,000-a-week, also present a challenge for many European teams considering a move.
Therefore, Rashford is currently on course to remain a Manchester United player beyond the summer transfer window.
