Chelsea presented with Lewis-Skelly opportunity
Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Myles Lewis-Skelly. This development follows the recent arrival of Bruno Guimaraes at Arsenal, which could potentially make the London club open to selling the 19-year-old.
Lewis-Skelly, an academy product of Arsenal’s Hale End, also spent time at Cobham. He signed a contract extension with Arsenal last year but is now being linked with a move away. The England international played 36 times for Arsenal in various competitions last season, with 19 of those appearances as a starter.
Following Guimaraes’s arrival, Lewis-Skelly was offered to both Chelsea and Manchester United. Sources indicate that the versatile midfielder has been on Chelsea’s radar for some time. There is a suggestion that Arsenal might find it difficult to decline a strong offer from Chelsea for the player.
Lewis-Skelly’s role and potential move
Lewis-Skelly has featured as a defensive midfielder in pre-season games, in the absence of players like Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino, and Guimaraes. His performances have been varied, though he made a significant impression in the left eight role towards the end of last season, which earned him a start in the Champions League final.
Naturally a central midfielder, Lewis-Skelly can also provide cover on the left side of defense. Chelsea has already secured Pep Chavarria, pending official confirmation, and has Jorrel Hato as options at left-back after Marc Cucurella’s departure. In midfield, Chelsea has players such as Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo, Valentin Barco, and Enzo Fernandez.
Fernandez’s future at Stamford Bridge is currently uncertain, but he is expected to return to training this week and remain a Chelsea player for Xabi Alonso’s debut season. Chelsea has signed several players this summer, and while the club’s focus is now largely on player departures, the possibility of adding to Alonso’s squad if an opportunity arises cannot be ruled out.
Arsenal’s perspective on Lewis-Skelly
Lewis-Skelly’s journey into the Arsenal first team has seen rapid development since his breakthrough in the 2024-25 season. He capitalized on injuries within the squad to become a notable young full-back in the Premier League. This form led to his inclusion in the England squad, and in March 2025, he became the youngest player to score on his England debut in a match against Albania at Wembley.
A few months later, the academy graduate was awarded a new five-year contract. Despite his success at left-back, Lewis-Skelly’s natural position is midfield, where he came through Arsenal’s Hale End academy. His attributes, including his ability to invert into midfield, protect the ball in tight spaces, and evade opponents, were evident even when he played in the back four.
However, the past season presented challenges for the teenager. With defender Riccardo Calafiori regaining fitness and the arrival of Piero Hincapie, who joined permanently from Bayer Leverkusen, Lewis-Skelly’s playing minutes became limited. Mikel Arteta acknowledged being “tough” on Lewis-Skelly.
Towards the end of last season, with Martin Zubimendi’s performances declining, Lewis-Skelly was given a chance in midfield against Fulham. His strong performance led to him starting nearly all remaining games as Arsenal secured the Premier League title and reached the Champions League final, where they were defeated by Paris St-Germain.
The transfer market plays a significant role in club finances, and as an academy graduate, selling Lewis-Skelly would represent “pure profit” for Arsenal. This concept is not always popular with supporters, especially concerning a player with a strong connection to the club. Lewis-Skelly himself acknowledged this, captioning a picture with the Premier League trophy “pure profit” during the title celebrations at Selhurst Park.
Arsenal aims for financial sustainability and has considered offers for Lewis-Skelly. However, his impressive end to the season in his preferred central midfield position may have prompted a re-evaluation of his status for the current summer. The club is also moving closer to finalizing the signing of Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes.
Despite potential competition, Lewis-Skelly’s talent and history at Arsenal position him as a contender for game time. The late finish of the World Cup and the involvement of several Arsenal players in the tournament mean that some of his competitors for a starting spot are behind him in match fitness. Players such as Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Eberechi Eze, Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino are yet to fully rejoin the squad.
Lewis-Skelly has started in pre-season friendlies against Girona and Real Betis, focusing on securing opportunities for the upcoming campaign. Against Betis, he played at the base of the Arsenal midfield, demonstrating assurance in his role as the deepest-lying midfielder. He effectively brought the ball upfield when Arsenal needed to progress play and linked well with Calafiori, even covering at left-back when the Italian advanced. Calafiori commented on their partnership, stating, “I really like to play with him, a really good player.”
