Umran Malik is poised to lead the fast bowling attack for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the upcoming IPL 2026 season, as confirmed on March 25, 2026. This marks a significant return for Malik, who has been sidelined due to injuries for the majority of the last three years.
KKR’s bowling lineup has faced severe challenges, losing key players like Harshit Rana and Akash Deep to injuries. Additionally, Matheesha Pathirana is currently recovering from an injury sustained during the T20 World Cup, while Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman is unavailable due to diplomatic issues.
Malik, who joined KKR in IPL 2025, previously showcased his talent by taking 22 wickets in 14 matches during the 2022 IPL season with Sunrisers Hyderabad. His fastest recorded delivery in the IPL reached an impressive 157 km/h, and he consistently exceeds speeds of 140 km/h.
Having played 10 ODIs and eight T20Is for India, Malik aims to make a strong impact this season. He expressed his determination, stating, “I want to play all the matches in this IPL and perform well, and set myself up for an India comeback.”
Malik’s journey has not been easy; he was bought for ₹75 lakhs in the IPL auction but was benched in IPL 2025. Now, he is eager to demonstrate his capabilities and contribute significantly to KKR’s success.
Reflecting on his return, Malik said, “I feel good and fresh on returning and I’m quite excited to be back playing.” He emphasized the importance of pace in his bowling strategy, noting, “Yes, pace is my weapon, which is something I’ll definitely use and fall back on. But with it, I will have to look at the other aspects too, like variations.”
He further highlighted the significance of slower deliveries in modern cricket, stating, “From that perspective, the slower delivery carries importance for every bowler, I believe, especially in today’s times, the slower is the main delivery.”
As the IPL 2026 season approaches, the KKR management and fans are hopeful that Malik’s return will bolster their bowling attack and lead to a successful campaign.
