TVK’s Electoral Debut in Tamil Nadu

Reaction from the field

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded by C. Joseph Vijay in 2024, is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on March 29, 2026. This marks the party’s first foray into electoral politics, and its strategies reflect a keen focus on addressing pressing social issues, particularly concerning youth and women’s safety.

Vijay has announced his candidacy from two constituencies: Perambur and Tiruchi East. In Perambur, he faces off against the incumbent MLA R.D. Shekar from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), while in Tiruchi East, he will contend with DMK’s Inigo Irudayaraj and AIADMK’s K. Rajasekaran. This competitive landscape underscores the stakes involved for TVK as it seeks to establish its presence in a politically charged environment.

Vijay’s campaign is underscored by a comprehensive manifesto that includes a range of initiatives aimed at curbing drug abuse and enhancing educational opportunities. Notably, the manifesto promises collateral-free education loans of up to 20 lakhs, alongside an unemployment allowance of 4,000 rupees for graduates and 2,000 rupees for diploma holders. Additionally, a monthly stipend of 10,000 rupees for graduates and 8,000 rupees for ITI students is proposed, reflecting a commitment to support the youth.

In a bid to foster entrepreneurship, Vijay aims to provide collateral-free loans of 25 lakhs for aspiring business owners and create 500 creatrepreneur schools. Furthermore, he has pledged to establish a Tamil Nadu Youth Advisory Council to facilitate youth participation in governance. This approach is indicative of a broader strategy to engage younger voters and address their concerns directly.

Vijay’s campaign rhetoric emphasizes a corruption-free administration and the safety of women, with the leader asserting, “I will ensure the safety of women.” His commitment to a drug-free Tamil Nadu is also a central theme, as he stated, “I will work to create a drug-free Tamil Nadu.” Such promises resonate with voters who are increasingly concerned about social issues affecting their communities.

As TVK prepares for its electoral debut, the party’s general secretary, ‘Bussy’ N. Anand, will contest from T. Nagar, while K.A. Sengottaiyan will represent the party in Gobichettipalayam. The strategic selection of candidates across various constituencies aims to maximize TVK’s chances of securing seats in the assembly.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of TVK’s campaign strategies and potential alliances. However, with Vijay’s assertive declarations, including “TVK will win,” the party is clearly positioning itself as a formidable contender in the Tamil Nadu political landscape.
