Star Sports Set to Broadcast IPL 2026 After Ban Lift in Bangladesh

Prior to the recent developments, the broadcasting of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Bangladesh faced significant restrictions due to political tensions, particularly surrounding the removal of cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from the league. This ban had left fans without access to one of the most popular cricket tournaments in the world.

However, a decisive moment occurred when the newly appointed information and broadcasting minister of Bangladesh, Zahir Uddin Swapan, announced that the government would no longer bar any applications for telecasting the IPL. This shift has opened the door for Star Sports, the official broadcaster of the IPL, to resume coverage.

The IPL 2026 is scheduled to begin on March 28 and run until May 31, with Star Sports set to provide commentary in an impressive 12 languages. This expansion in language offerings reflects a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility for cricket fans across the region.

R Ashwin is set to make his IPL commentary debut in Hindi, joining a panel that includes notable cricketers and commentators. The live coverage will be available on Star Sports, with additional streaming options through JioHotstar.

Before the ban lift, no formal applications for IPL telecasting were submitted, highlighting the extent of the restrictions. Now, with the government’s positive stance towards broadcasting the IPL, the landscape has dramatically changed.

Swapan emphasized the government’s new approach, stating, “We will not bar anyone from telecasting it,” and added, “We don’t want to mix politics with sport.” This statement marks a significant departure from previous policies that intertwined political issues with sports broadcasting.

The lifting of the ban is expected to have a direct impact on viewership and engagement among cricket fans in Bangladesh, who have long awaited the opportunity to watch the IPL. This reconciliation mirrors historical patterns where cricket acts as a bridge or a barrier in South Asian geopolitics.

As the IPL 2026 approaches, the anticipation among fans is palpable, and the involvement of Star Sports promises to enhance the viewing experience significantly. The commentary panel’s diverse language offerings will cater to a wide audience, ensuring that cricket enthusiasts can enjoy the tournament in their preferred language.

Overall, the lifting of the ban represents a pivotal moment for sports broadcasting in Bangladesh, with Star Sports poised to play a crucial role in bringing the excitement of IPL 2026 to fans across the country.
