Sitaare Zameen Par’s Journey
Aamir Khan’s film Sitaare Zameen Par is poised to stream on SonyLIV after a successful theatrical release that earned ₹167 crore in India. The film, an official remake of the Spanish film Champions (Campeones), has garnered significant attention since its debut.
Before its release, Khan had initially rejected multiple OTT deals, opting instead for a YouTube rental model that charged ₹100 per view. This decision was part of his strategy to challenge industry norms regarding film distribution.
During its theatrical run, the film’s production budget saw a notable increase. Khan had to buy back Sony’s 25% stake in the film, raising the budget from ₹96 crore to approximately ₹133 crore. This buyout was a significant financial move, reflecting Khan’s commitment to the project.
Despite receiving offers from major OTT platforms for streaming rights that reached up to ₹125 crore, Khan declined these proposals, further emphasizing his unique approach to film distribution.
In addition to the film’s success, the entertainment landscape includes other notable projects. The series Raat Jawaan Hai, featuring Barun Sobti as a stay-at-home father, has also gained traction on SonyLIV. Sobti expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I thought, ‘Wow, I have to be part of this!’”
Furthermore, Everaw Nutrition, co-founded by Lucky Soni, Yash Soni, and Kanika Kishnani, recently appeared on Shark Tank India, showcasing their clean-label children’s food products. Lucky Soni remarked, “It’s simple – we wanted to build absolutely clean products that kids enjoy and parents trust.”
As the streaming date for Sitaare Zameen Par on SonyLIV approaches, the film’s journey highlights a significant shift in Khan’s distribution strategy, moving from traditional theatrical releases to digital platforms.
This sequence of events is crucial for both Khan and the broader film industry, as it may influence future distribution models and the relationship between filmmakers and OTT platforms.
