Property Tax Dues Lead to Sealing of Jayalalithaa’s Property in Hyderabad

A house belonging to J. Jayalalithaa has been sealed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) due to unpaid property tax dues amounting to ₹82.91 lakh. These dues have been accumulating since 2017, when the property tax first became due.

Initially, the total property tax dues reached ₹1.6 crore before any waivers were applied. Following waivers, the payable amount was reduced to approximately ₹83 lakh. The property is categorized as ‘Commercial’ and has been rented by Vijay Mallya, yet it remains registered under Jayalalithaa’s name in GHMC records.

In May 2020, the Madras High Court declared Jayalalithaa’s nephew and niece as her legal heirs, as she passed away without a will. Despite this, no payments have been made towards the outstanding dues, prompting the GHMC to issue a ‘Red Notice’ for non-payment.

The outstanding dues of ₹82.91 lakh reflect the amount after rebates under the One-Time Settlement scheme, which offers a 90% waiver on accumulated interest for property tax arrears. The property will remain under GHMC custody until the outstanding dues are cleared.

Repeated efforts to recover the dues have proven unsuccessful, raising concerns among observers regarding the future of the property and the legal heirs’ responsibilities. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any potential actions the heirs may take to resolve the outstanding tax issues.
