In late March 2023, the situation regarding petrol supply in Indore, India, became tense as rumors of a potential shortage began to circulate among residents. This panic buying was fueled by messages suggesting that petrol pumps might soon run dry, prompting many motorists to rush to fill their tanks. The sudden influx of customers led to short-term dry-outs at some petrol stations, causing further anxiety among the public.
On March 25, 2023, petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged in New Delhi, with petrol priced at ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67 per litre. Despite the stability in pricing, the rumors in Indore created a chaotic scene at local fuel stations. District administrations quickly moved to reassure citizens that there was no shortage of essential fuels across the country, emphasizing that oil refineries were operating at high capacity and that adequate stocks of petrol and diesel were available.
M L Maru, the district supply controller, stated, “There is sufficient stock available and petrol pumps will continue to receive supplies.” This statement was crucial in alleviating fears among the public. Rajendra Wasu, president of the Indore petrol dealers’ association, also confirmed that the panic was largely due to a temporary delay in supply from one oil company’s depot, asserting, “There is no shortage of fuel.”
In Indore district, daily consumption is estimated at around 10 lakh litres of petrol and about 15 lakh litres of diesel. The district is home to approximately 275 fuel stations, part of the larger network of around 5,500 fuel stations across Madhya Pradesh. While some petrol pumps faced temporary shortages due to the sudden rush, the overall supply chain remained intact, with assurances from local authorities that deliveries would resume promptly.
In the nearby city of Ujjain, around 150 petrol pumps reported adequate stocks, with approximately 16,000 kilolitres of petrol and 25,000 kilolitres of diesel available. This further highlighted the stability of fuel supplies in the region, despite the localized panic in Indore. The government’s reassurances were critical in calming the nerves of consumers who had flocked to petrol stations, fearing they might be left without fuel.
Motorists like Rohit Sharma and Anjali Jain expressed their concerns about the rumors, with Sharma stating, “I saw messages saying petrol pumps might run dry, so I came to fill fuel,” while Jain noted, “Everyone suddenly came to fill petrol because of the rumours.” These sentiments reflect the broader anxiety that can arise from misinformation, particularly in times of uncertainty.
