Lok Sabha to Address Resolution on Om Birla
The Lok Sabha is scheduled to take up a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla today. This significant move comes as a motion against Birla has been signed by 118 Opposition MPs, who accuse him of acting in a ‘blatantly partisan’ manner while conducting proceedings in the House.
The no-confidence notice was submitted to the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, with signatures from members of various political parties, including Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, and others, although Trinamool Congress did not participate.
In response to the unfolding situation, both the BJP and Congress have issued a three-line whip to their Lok Sabha MPs, instructing them to be present in the House until Tuesday. This directive underscores the high stakes involved in the upcoming discussions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly supported Birla, asserting that the Speaker has adhered to the values of the Constitution and parliamentary democracy. This backing from the Prime Minister may play a crucial role in the outcome of the resolution.
As the second phase of the budget session of Parliament commences today and continues until the 2nd of next month, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is also scheduled to make a statement regarding the situation in West Asia, which has entered its tenth day of conflict.
Amidst these developments, an unknown source indicated, “Mr. Birla will not preside over the proceedings, and instead, he will sit among members,” suggesting a shift in his role during this contentious period.
However, some analysts believe that the motion against Om Birla is unlikely to pass, indicating potential stability in his position despite the opposition’s efforts.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact implications of this motion and how it may affect the ongoing budget session.
