Noida Protests Demand Metro Connectivity After 10-Year Wait

On April 26, 2026, residents of Greater Noida West gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to protest for Metro connectivity, organized by the Noida Extension Flat Owners Welfare Association (NEFOWA). This demonstration comes in the wake of the Centre’s rejection of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Greater Noida West metro extension on April 3.

Approximately 3.5 lakh residents in Greater Noida West have been waiting for 10 years for the implementation of Metro services. The protest aims to draw attention to the urgent need for this essential public transport link, with around 50 housing societies participating in the demonstration.

Protesters raised slogans demanding immediate action on the Metro project, expressing their frustration over the prolonged delay. “We have been waiting for 10 years for this essential service to be implemented. The time for mere promises is over; we need action,” stated Abhishek Kumar, president of NEFOWA.

In a symbolic act, participants pulled a mock Metro pillar to illustrate their demands. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, workers in Noida Phase 2 protested for a salary hike, leading to vandalism and the arrest of 50 individuals. Police were forced to use tear gas to control the situation, which resulted in significant traffic disruptions across the area.

During the protests in Sector 84, two vehicles were set on fire, prompting authorities to issue a traffic advisory due to ongoing congestion and diversions. “We are compelled to face heavy traffic congestion, wasted travel time, and daily inconveniences. We are no longer satisfied with mere assurances. We demand concrete action,” said Brijesh Kumar, a resident of Greater Noida West.

The situation remains tense as police urge workers to maintain peace and restraint, stating that necessary action is being taken with minimum force being used. Residents continue to voice their discontent over the decade-long delay in the Metro project, emphasizing the need for urgent action from authorities.
