Declining Enrollment at International Schools on Jeju Island

Jeju Island is facing a critical situation as the enrollment in its international schools has dropped significantly, from 4,868 students in 2023 to just 4,133 in 2025. This decline has led to an enrollment rate decrease from 90 percent to 71.7 percent, raising concerns about the sustainability of these educational institutions.

The international schools on Jeju Island, which number four, have played a vital role in revitalizing rural areas since their inception. They have absorbed education spending worth 1.42 trillion won since 2011, contributing to the local economy. However, the recent trend of declining enrollment poses a threat to their future.

Annual costs for attending these international schools can reach up to 60 million won, which may deter potential students. As competition from unaccredited schools increases, the long-term viability of Jeju’s international schools remains uncertain.

Local officials are aware of the challenges. Kim Jin-tae, a local representative, emphasized the need for the central government to engage in consultations with a positive attitude, considering the broader implications of the situation. Oh Young-hun, another local leader, stated, “We will review various policy measures so that the Global Education City can establish itself as a global hub for residential education services.”

Despite these efforts, experts like Kim Sang-bong express skepticism about the success of all schools on Jeju Island, particularly given its unique circumstances as a leisure destination. The impact of international schools on the local population decline is also uncertain, as they may not attract enough students in remote areas.

In the realm of sports, Jeju SK recently drew 0-0 with Gwangju FC in their opening match of the 2026 season, with Sergio Costa expressing satisfaction with the atmosphere at the Jeju World Cup Stadium. Jeju SK is set to face FC Anyang in the second round of the Hana Bank K League 1 2026.

As the situation evolves, stakeholders are closely monitoring the developments surrounding Jeju’s international schools. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the potential measures that may be implemented to address the declining enrollment and its broader implications for the community.
