Significant Disruption in LPG Booking
The Indian oil gas booking system, particularly Indane’s LPG refill service, has encountered a major disruption due to an unprecedented surge in customer demand. This has resulted in a nationwide crash of the booking system, leaving many consumers unable to secure timely refills for their domestic LPG cylinders.
Causes of the Crisis
The crisis was triggered by a dramatic increase in booking volumes, which skyrocketed to 10 times the daily average following recent government policy changes. The volume of calls to Indane’s Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) and missed call booking numbers surged to 8-10 times the usual levels, overwhelming the system.
As a direct consequence, the government has increased the minimum waiting period for booking a domestic LPG cylinder refill from 21 days to 25 days. This change reflects the growing imbalance between supply and demand, as the supply of domestic cylinders has reduced by 50% while demand has simultaneously increased by 50%.
Impact on Consumers
Customers are now facing significantly longer wait times for LPG cylinder bookings. Reports indicate that many individuals are anxious, leading to crowded distribution centers as they seek to exchange their empty cylinders for new ones. An employee at an Indane distribution center noted, “People were anxious and crowded the office with their empty cylinders to get new ones.”
Furthermore, the price of a standard 14.2 kg LPG gas cylinder in Delhi has risen to ₹913, marking an increase of ₹60. This price hike adds to the financial burden on consumers already grappling with supply issues.
Operational Challenges
Indane has acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, “We are currently facing an unprecedented situation.” The disruptions have also affected the vendor invoice management system, compounding the challenges faced by distributors and consumers alike.
Geopolitical Factors
The situation is further complicated by geopolitical tensions that have delayed imports, which account for 60% of India’s LPG needs. While domestic production has been prioritized, the ongoing supply chain issues continue to hinder the availability of LPG cylinders.
