The wider picture
The census in India is constitutionally mandated to be held every 10 years under the Census Act, 1948. The upcoming census, scheduled to commence on April 1, 2026, marks a significant event as it will be the first census conducted since 2010-11. Over 3 million Indian officials are set to participate in this extensive door-to-door survey, which aims to gather crucial demographic data across the country.
In a notable shift, the census will include a self-enumeration phase for the first 15 days, allowing citizens to fill out their information independently before officials begin their rounds. This initiative is expected to enhance the accuracy of the data collected, reflecting the diverse and dynamic nature of India’s population.
Coinciding with the census, the 16th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship will also kick off on April 1, 2026, at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar. This tournament will feature a total of 30 teams competing across three divisions, showcasing the talent of young hockey players from various regions of India.
Division ‘A’ of the Hockey Championship will comprise 12 teams, which will be divided into four pools. The tournament is set to last for 12 days, culminating on April 12, 2026. This championship serves as a vital platform for identifying and nurturing young talent, as highlighted by Shri Bola Nath Singh, who emphasized its importance in the development of grassroots hockey.
Dr. Dilip Tirkey, a prominent figure in Indian hockey, remarked, “The Sub Junior National Championship continues to play a vital role in strengthening the grassroots structure of Indian hockey.” This reflects the ongoing commitment to fostering the next generation of athletes in the sport.
In addition to these events, the India-Japan Economic Security Conference held on December 10, 2025, in New Delhi, underscores the broader context of India’s strategic initiatives. The conference focused on enhancing cooperation in economic security, supply chains, and emerging technologies between India and Japan, indicating a growing partnership that could influence various sectors, including sports.
As India prepares for these significant events, observers are keenly watching how the census data will impact policy-making and resource allocation in the coming years. The dual occurrence of the census and the hockey championship highlights India’s multifaceted approach to development, combining demographic insights with the promotion of sports and youth engagement.
