Himanta Biswa Sarma Faces Allegations of Multiple Passports and Foreign Assets

The wider picture

The controversy involves allegations of foreign assets and multiple passports related to the Chief Minister’s family. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who currently serves as the Chief Minister of Assam, has found himself at the center of a political storm following claims made by Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera. Khera alleged that Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, holds passports from three different countries: the UAE, Antigua and Barbuda, and Egypt.

Khera’s assertions included that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma owns luxury properties in Dubai and has significant investments in the United States, with a budget of approximately $34.67 billion for a company based in Wyoming. He further claimed that one of the passports is a ‘golden card’ issued in Abu Dhabi, valid until March 13, 2027, while the Antigua and Barbuda passport was issued on August 26, 2021, and is valid until August 25, 2031. The Egyptian passport, according to Khera, was issued on February 13, 2022, and is valid until February 12, 2029.

In response to these allegations, Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened to sue Khera for defamation, stating that he would file both criminal and civil cases within 48 hours. Sarma characterized Khera’s claims as “malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam.” He emphasized that such accusations reflect the Congress party’s “deep frustration and panic” as they face the upcoming elections.

Sarma’s rebuttal included a pointed question directed at Khera: “How can an Indian national have three passports from three different countries?” This statement underscores the gravity of the allegations and Sarma’s determination to defend his family’s integrity. He asserted that the claims suggest attempts to relocate abroad after losing elections, further fueling the political tension surrounding the issue.

The political landscape in Assam is particularly charged, with the state having 126 Assembly seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners aim to secure at least 100 seats in the upcoming elections, making the stakes high for all involved. Observers note that the timing of these allegations could be a strategic move by the Congress party to undermine Sarma’s position ahead of the elections.

As the situation unfolds, both parties are gearing up for a heated political battle. Sarma has vowed that “truth will prevail” and that those spreading misinformation will be held accountable. The allegations have not only intensified the rivalry between the BJP and Congress but have also raised questions about the ethical standards of political discourse in the region.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the validity of Khera’s claims, and the political ramifications of this controversy are yet to be fully realized. As the deadline for Sarma’s legal action approaches, the political atmosphere in Assam remains charged with uncertainty and anticipation.
