FIFA World Cup: Preparations for 2026 Lag Behind Schedule

“The president is focused on making this the greatest World Cup ever while ensuring it is the safest and most secure in history,” stated Davis Ingle, emphasizing the commitment to excellence as preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 continue.

Scheduled to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament will feature 104 matches and 48 teams, expanding from the previous format of 64 matches and 32 teams. This significant increase marks a new era for the World Cup, which has been held every four years since its inception in 1930, except during World War II.

However, US preparations are currently lagging behind schedule due to a delay in $625 million in federal security grants. This funding is crucial for ensuring the safety and security of the event, which is expected to draw millions of fans from around the globe.

In addition to security concerns, FIFA has been actively working on broadcasting rights for the tournament. While deals have been secured across Asia, India remains unsigned, with only 90 days left before the event. The sports market in India is heavily dominated by cricket, making it challenging for football to compete for advertising revenue.

As Ashish Bhasin noted, “The sports market in India is totally and completely dominated by cricket.” This presents a significant hurdle for FIFA as they seek to maximize their advertising impact, which is forecasted to decline from $12.6 billion in 2018 to $10.5 billion in 2026.

FIFA’s efforts to launch Invitations to Tender for broadcasting rights for both the 2026 and 2030 World Cups began in July 2025, indicating a proactive approach to securing media partnerships.

Despite the challenges, the excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup remains palpable, with fans eagerly anticipating the event. The first World Cup was organized by FIFA in 1930 and won by Uruguay, setting the stage for what has become the world’s most prestigious football tournament.

As preparations continue, the focus remains on overcoming the current obstacles to ensure a successful and memorable tournament. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the resolution of funding issues and broadcasting rights, but stakeholders are hopeful for a positive outcome.
