Cicada COVID Variant in India: Key Developments

The Cicada COVID-19 variant, classified as BA.3.2 and part of the Omicron family, has emerged as a significant concern in India. This variant, first spotted in South Africa in November 2024, carries over 70 mutations compared to the original Wuhan strain, with more than 50 of these mutations occurring in the spike protein.

As of now, the Cicada variant has been detected in 22 countries, indicating its rapid spread. Symptoms associated with this variant include cough, extreme fatigue, runny nose, headache, sore throat, mild fever, muscle and joint pain, loss of taste or smell, night sweats, and rash. However, it remains unconfirmed whether the Cicada variant causes more severe illness than previous variants.

In the United States, the first confirmed case of the Cicada variant was reported in June 2025. By January 2026, three patients had been confirmed, all of whom recovered. This timeline highlights the variant’s potential to spread internationally.

Public health officials are closely monitoring the situation. The CDC has stated, “Monitoring the spread of BA.3.2 provides valuable information about the potential for this new SARS-CoV-2 lineage to evade immunity from a previous infection or vaccination.” This underscores the importance of vigilance as the variant spreads.

Dr. Robert Hopkins Jr. remarked, “It is possible we will see Cicada become the dominant strain in the U.S., but that is by no means certain.” This statement reflects the uncertainty surrounding the variant’s impact on the ongoing pandemic.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the real-world data on the severity of illness caused by the Cicada variant. As health authorities continue to gather information, the situation remains fluid.

In summary, the emergence of the Cicada COVID variant in India and its detection in multiple countries necessitates ongoing monitoring and research to understand its implications for public health.
