Brunei: Albanese’s Visit to Secure Energy Supplies Amid Global Uncertainty

“Engaging with critical regional partners such as Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia will help ensure Australia’s energy supply remains secure during times of uncertainty,” stated Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ahead of his upcoming visit to Brunei and Malaysia from April 14 to 17, 2026.

Albanese’s trip is particularly significant as it aims to address the disruptions in fuel supplies caused by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Australia, which imports about 80% of its fuel, relies heavily on its regional partners for energy security.

During his visit, Albanese is scheduled to meet with Brunei’s ruler, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This engagement is crucial as Brunei supplies 9% of Australia’s diesel imports and 11% of its fertiliser-grade urea imports.

Additionally, Malaysia stands as Australia’s third-largest source of refined fuel, contributing 10% of its fertiliser-grade urea imports. The relationship is mutually beneficial, as Australia supplies 95% of Malaysia’s imported natural gas.

The backdrop of this visit is marked by localised shortages and soaring prices in Australia, particularly following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil. Albanese emphasized the importance of securing fuel and fertiliser supplies during his talks.

“I will travel to Brunei and Malaysia for talks focused on securing the supply of fuel and fertiliser,” Albanese added, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, the Australian government is actively engaging with regional partners to ensure energy supply security. Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong are leading these efforts, recognizing the critical role that Brunei and Malaysia play in Australia’s energy strategy.

Further developments from the meetings are expected to outline specific agreements or collaborations aimed at stabilizing the energy supply chain for Australia.
