Bank Holidays in India: April 2026 Update

“The first Saturday of the month is a working day for banks in India, so branches were open on April 4,” stated a banking official, highlighting the recent operational changes.

On April 4, 2026, banks across India adhered to the new working schedule, remaining open as it was the first Saturday of the month. This marks a shift in the banking calendar, where only specific Saturdays are designated as holidays.

Following this working Saturday, banks will observe a weekly off on Sunday, April 5, 2026. This pattern underscores the ongoing adjustments in banking operations to accommodate customer needs.

The next cluster of state-wise bank holidays is set to occur between April 14 and April 21, 2026. April 14 is particularly significant as it is celebrated for Dr B R Ambedkar Jayanti, Tamil New Year, Vishu, and Bohag Bihu in various states.

Additionally, April 15 will see some regions observing the Bengali New Year, further contributing to the diverse cultural landscape of bank holidays in India.

April 21 will be recognized for Mahavir Jayanti in several states, marking another important date in the banking calendar.

It is crucial to note that only the second and fourth Saturdays are official bank holidays, while the first, third, and fifth Saturdays remain working days. This regulation can sometimes lead to confusion among customers.

As a result, many customers have expressed their concerns regarding the complexity of bank holidays in India. “Bank holidays in India are not always straightforward,” remarked a financial analyst, emphasizing the need for clarity.

Despite these holidays, digital payment systems such as UPI, IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS continue to operate 24×7, ensuring that financial transactions remain uninterrupted even on designated bank holidays.

As the month progresses, customers and banking institutions alike will be closely monitoring the upcoming holidays and their implications for banking operations.
