Venkatesh Iyer has been signed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for ₹7 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, marking a significant move in the cricketing landscape. This comes after Iyer’s mixed performance in IPL 2025, where he scored 142 runs at an average of 20.28.
Mo Bobat, the director of cricket at RCB, emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating, “Adding a player of Venky’s (Venkatesh Iyer) quality, experience, and calibre is a no-brainer.” This highlights Iyer’s potential despite his previous season’s struggles.
In IPL 2025, Iyer was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he contributed to their championship victory. His performance, however, raised questions about his consistency, prompting RCB to take a calculated risk by investing heavily in him.
In addition to his IPL commitments, Iyer has also been retained by Indore Pink Panthers for ₹12.50 lakh, making him the most expensive player in MPL 2026. This retention reflects his value in the domestic circuit, where he has been reappointed as the captain of the team.
MPL 2026 is set to take place in Indore after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League, providing Iyer with an opportunity to showcase his skills further. Sandeep Jain, a representative from Indore Pink Panthers, remarked, “Retaining a dynamic and experienced player like Venkatesh Iyer at the highest price is a strategic decision.”
Bobat also noted the importance of competition for places within the RCB squad, indicating that Iyer’s signing is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the team.
As the IPL season approaches, observers are keen to see how Iyer will adapt to his new environment at RCB and whether he can regain his form. Details remain unconfirmed regarding his role and performance expectations for the upcoming season.
