Cricket IPL: RCB Sold for $1.78 Billion Ahead of 2026 Season

The numbers

The cricket IPL 2026 season is gearing up with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) recently sold for a staggering $1.78 billion. This sale marks a significant moment in the league’s history, reflecting the growing financial power and popularity of cricket in India.

The new ownership group includes prominent entities such as the Aditya Birla Group, The Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures, and Blackstone. Aryaman Vikram Birla will take the helm as chair of RCB, bringing fresh leadership to a franchise that clinched its first IPL title in 2025.

As the 2026 season approaches, several key rules and protocols have been established. The Impact Player rule, which was introduced in 2023, will remain in effect until at least 2027. Additionally, a ball change is permitted after the 10th over of the second innings to address conditions affected by dew.

New training protocols have also been implemented, prohibiting formal practice sessions on match days. This change aims to streamline player preparation and maintain focus on performance during games.

RCB’s star player, Rishabh Pant, had a mixed performance in the previous season, scoring 269 runs at an average of 24.45 over 14 matches, with a strike rate of 133.17. His captain, Faf du Plessis, has emphasized the need for Pant to enhance his impact on the game. “I want him to be more of a high-impact player,” Du Plessis stated, highlighting the importance of Pant’s early-game strategy.

Du Plessis further remarked, “Rishabh Pant’s stroke play is one that looks all over the place. He needs to figure out exactly what his game plan looks like to give himself the best chance. For me, it is about his first six balls.” These insights underline the expectations placed on Pant as he prepares for the upcoming season.

As the IPL 2026 season approaches, fans and analysts alike are keen to see how these changes will impact team dynamics and player performances. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further adjustments to the league’s structure or rules, but the anticipation continues to build.
