What does the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal mean for the state’s political landscape? The answer is significant: it has led to the deletion of over 61 lakh names from the electoral rolls, fundamentally altering the voter base ahead of upcoming elections.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to publish the first supplementary voter list today under the SIR process. This initiative has seen 27 lakh pending voter records settled, with approximately 2 lakh names being processed daily. To facilitate this, 19 appeal tribunals have been established across 23 districts, staffed by former judges of the High Court, ensuring a thorough review of voter registrations.
As a result of the SIR process, 61.7 lakh names have been deleted from the electoral rolls. Additionally, more than 60 lakh citizens’ names are currently under adjudication, indicating a substantial number of voters may be affected. Notably, in the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, 47,000 names were deleted during this exercise. This constituency is particularly significant as Mamata Banerjee won the seat in 2021 with a margin of 58,832 votes, underscoring the potential impact of these deletions on her electoral prospects.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, is currently ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in both vote percentage and the number of seats. However, the BJP has raised concerns regarding the SIR process, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing the TMC of wanting to retain names of illegal immigrants and even deceased individuals on the voter list.
Mamata Banerjee has expressed confidence in her electoral success, stating, “I will win from Bhabanipur even if by only one vote.” This statement reflects her determination amidst the ongoing changes to the voter rolls, which could significantly influence the upcoming elections.
