The wider picture
Ashok Kharat, a self-styled numerologist and godman, was arrested by the Nashik Crime Branch on March 19, 2026, following serious allegations of serial sexual exploitation, drugging, and involvement in black magic. Kharat, who gained prominence after transitioning from a Merchant Navy employee to a spiritual guide, has been accused of using intoxicants mixed in food and water to drug women before sexually assaulting them.
The case against Kharat was initiated after a 35-year-old woman reported systemic abuse that began in November 2022 and allegedly continued until 2025. He has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rape, criminal intimidation, and sexual harassment. Additionally, Kharat faces charges under the Maharashtra Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013.
A raid on Kharat’s office led to the seizure of a pen drive containing 58 obscene video clips, further complicating his legal troubles. The Maharashtra government has responded to the gravity of the situation by forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate the allegations against him.
Kharat’s arrest has ignited a political controversy in Maharashtra, particularly due to his connections with various politicians and celebrities. Photos and videos have surfaced showing political leaders in Kharat’s company, raising concerns about potential political patronage. Notably, Kharat’s influence peaked in November 2022 when then-Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited his temple, highlighting the extent of his connections.
In the wake of Kharat’s arrest, political figures have begun to react. Sanjay Raut remarked, “Maharashtra’s Epstein file has been opened,” suggesting that the implications of Kharat’s case could be far-reaching. Meanwhile, Rupali Chakankar stated, “I have no knowledge about Kharat’s personal life or the allegations made against him,” indicating a possible distancing from the controversy.
Yogesh Kadam, a government official, assured the public that “the investigation will be impartial. Anyone found involved will face action,” emphasizing the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the allegations. Kharat has been remanded to police custody until March 24, 2026, as the investigation unfolds.
As the situation develops, observers are keenly watching how the political landscape in Maharashtra may shift in response to Kharat’s connections and the serious nature of the allegations against him. The ramifications of this case could extend beyond Kharat himself, potentially implicating others in the political sphere.
