Instagram Messages Outage Reported
On March 11, 2023, thousands of Instagram users began reporting issues with sending and receiving messages. The outage started around 2 AM in the United States and 7:40 AM IST in India, leading to widespread frustration among users.
According to Downdetector, over 10,000 complaints were logged regarding Instagram access issues, with 71 percent of those complaints specifically related to problems accessing the app. Users in the United States reported the highest concentration of problems, while around 250 users in India also noted difficulties.
Complaints peaked early in the morning, with users turning to other social media platforms to confirm the outage. Many expressed their frustrations online, with one user stating, “Are Instagram dms down or… am I cooked?” Another user lamented, “My messages, my contacts on Instagram, I can’t use the search tool or even scroll up! The whole thing is just broken right now.”
In addition to the access issues, 20 percent of users reported server connection problems, while 5 percent experienced issues with their Instagram feed or timeline not loading. Reports of issues also came from the United Kingdom, where approximately 170 users indicated they were affected.
Despite the widespread nature of the outage, Meta has not yet commented on the situation. Users have speculated about the cause of the outage, with some linking it to external events, including the US-Iran war. However, details remain unconfirmed, and the relationship between the outage and these events is speculative.
As of now, the situation remains unresolved for many users, who are eager for a return to normal functionality. The outage highlights the reliance on social media platforms for communication, particularly in times of need.
