LPG Production and Supply Amidst Global Tensions

LPG Production and Supply Amidst Global Tensions

The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced a 25 day inter-booking period to avoid hoarding and black marketing. This statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas underscores the urgency with which the government is addressing the current challenges in the LPG supply chain.

In recent weeks, the global fuel supply chain has been significantly impacted by geopolitical tensions, particularly conflicts in West Asia. These developments have prompted the government to issue orders to oil refineries to increase LPG production for domestic use. The focus is now on ensuring that households receive adequate supplies amidst rising demand and supply disruptions.

The Ministry has taken decisive steps to prioritize domestic LPG supply, reflecting a commitment to meet the needs of households first. A new 25-day inter-booking period has been introduced to mitigate the risks of hoarding and black marketing, which have become pressing concerns as the supply chain faces strain.

In addition to prioritizing domestic needs, the government has also taken measures to ensure that non-domestic supplies from imported LPG are directed towards essential sectors. Hospitals and educational institutions have been identified as priority areas, ensuring that critical services continue to operate smoothly despite the ongoing supply challenges.

However, the situation remains precarious. Reports indicate that LPG supply disruptions have led to refill delays of 2 to 8 days in major cities like Mumbai. Furthermore, the supply of commercial LPG cylinders has been completely halted, severely affecting hotels and restaurants that rely on these supplies for their operations.

P C Rao, a representative from the hospitality sector, highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, “Only about 10% of hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru received their LPG supply today.” This stark reality illustrates the challenges faced by the industry, which is already grappling with the aftermath of previous disruptions.

To further manage the supply situation, a committee of three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies has been formed to review LPG supply requests from non-domestic sectors. This committee aims to streamline the allocation process and ensure that essential services receive the necessary resources.

As the government continues to navigate these challenges, the focus remains on stabilizing the LPG supply chain and ensuring that households and essential services are prioritized. The situation is evolving, and further developments are anticipated as the government responds to the ongoing global pressures affecting fuel supply.
