The Audi team underwent a transition after being purchased from Sauber, developing a new power unit and car from scratch. Gabriel Bortoleto, who made his F1 debut with the former Kick Sauber team in 2025, has now stepped into a significant role with Audi as they aim to establish themselves in the competitive landscape of Formula 1.
Breaking Development
At the Australian Grand Prix held at Albert Park on March 7, 2026, Bortoleto qualified 10th in Q1 and Q2, showcasing his potential despite facing a drive issue that prevented him from completing Q3. His qualifying time in Q2 was 1:20.221, while teammate Nico Hülkenberg qualified 11th with a time of 1:20.303.
Bortoleto expressed satisfaction with the team’s achievements, stating, “I’m happy with what the team has achieved. From now on, we keep working.” He also praised the behind-the-scenes efforts of the Audi team, noting, “I’ve been impressed by the amount of work these people have been doing behind the scenes that maybe a lot of you guys don’t know because it’s not shown.” Jonathan Wheatley, a key figure in the team, remarked, “Qualifying was extremely encouraging for the team, and seeing Gabi reach Q3 in Audi’s first race is a special moment for everyone involved.” However, Bortoleto lamented, “It’s a real shame not to be able to take part in Q3. It would have been a just reward for the team’s hard work.”
Looking Ahead
As the Audi team aims to join the fight for points in their first race, observers are keen to see how Bortoleto and Hülkenberg will perform in the race itself. The team has developed a new power unit at their Neuburg facility, which had not run on track until January 2026. The initial results from qualifying suggest a promising start for Audi in the 2026 season.
