Karnataka Budget 2026: Key Highlights and Developments

Karnataka Budget 2026-27 Presented

The Karnataka Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 was unveiled by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on March 6, 2026. This budget aims to address various developmental needs across the state, with a particular focus on the Kalyana Karnataka region.

Key Allocations and Initiatives

A significant ₹5,000-crore action plan has been proposed for the development of the Kalyana Karnataka region, utilizing funds from the Kalyana Karnataka Region Development Board (KKRDB). This initiative is part of a broader strategy established under Article 371(J) of the Constitution, aimed at rectifying regional imbalances through targeted investments.

In addition, the budget allocates ₹200 crore for the construction of 1,668 anganwadi buildings in the Kalyana Karnataka region, enhancing early childhood education and nutrition services.

Furthermore, new residential first-grade colleges are set to be established in Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, and Koppal districts at a cost of ₹18 crore, aimed at improving educational access in these areas.

Infrastructure Developments in Bengaluru

The budget also includes a substantial ₹6,939 crore for the Cauvery Phase-VI water supply project, which is crucial for Bengaluru’s growing population. Major road infrastructure projects, metro expansion, and plans for a second airport were highlighted as key allocations for the city.

Additionally, a 1,000-bed charitable super-speciality hospital is to be constructed at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases in collaboration with the Azim Premji Foundation, enhancing healthcare services in the region.

Regulatory Changes and Reactions

The budget introduces a ban on social media usage for children under the age of 16, reflecting a growing concern over the impact of digital platforms on youth.

Reactions to the budget have varied, with some stakeholders questioning whether the special development mechanism under Article 371(J) is effectively supplementing development or merely substituting for regular sectoral spending. Details remain unconfirmed.

As the budget is implemented, the effectiveness of the KKRDB in addressing developmental needs compared to traditional budget allocations will be closely monitored.
