2026 Winter Paralympics Set to Begin

The 2026 Winter Paralympic Games will kick off on March 6, 2026, in Italy, featuring 79 medal events across six sports and over 600 athletes from 56 countries.

This edition marks the 14th Winter Paralympics and celebrates its 50th anniversary since the first Games were held in 1960. The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place in Verona, with the closing ceremony occurring in Cortina D’Ampezzo on March 15, 2026.

The United States will be represented by 68 athletes, making it the second-largest contingent after China. The U.S. sled hockey team aims to secure a record fifth consecutive gold medal, highlighting their dominance in the sport.

For the first time, the Games will include mixed doubles events in wheelchair curling, reflecting the ongoing evolution of the Paralympic sports landscape. Notably, ten athletes from Russia and Belarus will compete under their own flags, a decision that has sparked controversy following the IPC’s recent policy changes.

Iran will not be represented at the Games due to safety concerns for its athlete, who had qualified for two events. This absence underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions that may affect participation in international sporting events.

As excitement builds, athletes like Brenna Huckaby emphasize the importance of visibility for para sports, stating, “Visibility is huge.” Meanwhile, Giacomo Bertagnolli expressed enthusiasm for competing in Europe, saying, “It will be a big stage for me and for the whole Paralympic world because we are finally in Italy and in Europe.”

The Paralympics have their roots in a British hospital for World War II veterans, where a wheelchair archery competition was organized in 1948. Since then, the Games have grown significantly, held every four years, and have become a platform for showcasing the talents of athletes with disabilities.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact number of medals expected for Team USA and the overall impact of geopolitical tensions on the Games. The IPC has yet to finalize the list of participating nations due to ongoing conflicts.
